A new update, after nearly a month of inactivity ^^.
If you head over to my projects page, you’ll see that it has gone under a major update. Alot of new projects have appeared. Alot of them are games as well 😀
Making games is hillarious. Can’t really say why, it just tickles your imagination. Inspired by the recent ludumdare.com contest, which resulted in over 1’400 games, I’ve decided to give it a go to create a bunch of games I’ve had in my mind for quite a while now. One is nearly completed, one is just about to start and the last one is in development stage.
I did not participate in LD23. Though I regret my decision. But it’s only 4 months until the next event :-). So in August, come and cheer me and thousands of other developers on as we compete in this awesome event!
Lastly, I want to apologize for being so inactive the last month. Have been really busy with work, programming and real life 🙂 I’ll try to be more active in the future!
Yesterday I basically got the “Go-Ahead” on a new project. The new project is a website to a local restaurant. They’ve been stuck with their old website for wopping 8 years and been unable to update it even though they’ve changed almost everything about the restaurant. The restaurant is located in Lindås, Sweden, where I grew up. So I’ve seen the changes this business has gone through.
Yesterday, while I was waiting for my pizza at this restaurant (nom nom), I talked a few minutes with the owner and he’d would really appreciate if I made him a prototype of a new website. So far we haven’t discussed any compensation, but this doesn’t matter to me. Why? I’ll tell you why.
The current website he got, (www.lindaspizzan.se It’s in Swedish, I know), looks like crap. He has never been satisfied with it and the designer basically ignored his requests. That’s not the worst, the designer of that website refuse to provide Content-update tools to the restaurant owner. So the designer does all the updates, not for free either as he charges 1 delivery of free pizza(s) every week.
I did some fast number crunching on this and I concluded that the total sum of the website so far is over 32’000 SEK (roughly 3’000 Euros). That’s 8 years, 52 weeks / year. 416 times has he gotten free pizzas, and the average price for a pizza is roughly 75 SEK although sometimes he got multiple free pizzas… But based on 1 pizza / week in 8 years..
The summary of this new project is to make a new, better, more attractive and modern website to this restaurant. A website which the owner, who has very little understanding of computers, can update himself free of charge. My main focus here is to make the restaurant more satisfied with how they are represented on the world wide web.
That’s it for now, will soon post an update on my other projects as well!
One week ago I decided to change my Windows 7 to Ubuntu 11.10, I did this because Win7 kept giving me issues and I grew tired of playing games.
Now when I’m in Ubuntu, I can’t play as many games but I can focus more on my hobby activities. The stuff under Project up there. So in this recent week I’ve made more progress on each of my projects than I have made during the month before.
Like “Cerberus”, I’ve been wanting to create an IRC Bot for like, forever.. Now I finally have the time, energy and inspiration to continue his development. His current version is 0.3, he’s not open for distribution quite yet as I’m yet to implement an easy way to configure him. So if you’d use him at the moment, he’d only respond to my OP commands. If you wish to use him on your IRC network, you’ll have to wait until version 0.4, which will be the first version open to distribution and public use. I have no ETA for 0.4 yet, so be patient.
Lately my focus has been directed on a website I’m creating for a client of mine, for free :-O.
The prototype I’ve created was approved this Saturday, so now I’m entering the next phase, where I start making the skeleton ready for some muscles and a brain. I cannot do any of this until I’m finished with my Development Grounds application. Development Grounds is an php application which is supposed to give me control over who views my prototypes (Got more than one project rolling at the same time).
To sum things up,
Why don’t companies use Linux more? Is Linux really a server _only_ software to them?
Sure, Ubuntu was a bit tricky to setup compared to Windows install-and-forget method, but I’m overall more satisfied with Ubuntu… Less amount of errors and crashes.
As of yesterday, when I realized how much spare-time I have on my work atm, I decided to start writing my own IRC bot.
I have my own IRC server and I needed some way to administrate the channels automatically. I’ve been waiting a while for a friend to provide me with his python bot, but as I’ve been waiting for that quite a long time now I decided it’s time to develop my own.
Simply because it’s portable to almost every device in the world and it’s one of my top 2 languages, when it comes to knowledge and experience.
Now, what functionality would You like in an IRC bot but never seem to find? Leave a comment!
